JURIED ART EXHIBITION: Call for Entries

Event:

The Boards of Directors of the ChildLight Montessori School and the Kathryn M. Lafley Center for the Humanities celebrate the opening of the new location for the ChildLight Montessori School at the Kathryn M. Lafley Center with the presentation of a juried art exhibit featuring original works of visual art expressing a common mission of the school and center.  The exhibition theme is “Awakening the Mind.” 

The exhibition will be held in connection with opening events the weekend of October 11-13, 2008.   Opening events will involve parents, alumni and supporters of ChildLight Montessori School, as well as community and business leaders, artists and teachers.  A Dedication Ceremony, reception and tours of the new building and peace garden will occur on Saturday, October 11, 2008.

Submissions:

Artists are invited to submit original works of visual art on the theme “Awakening the Mind.”  Entries will be accepted in all media except photography or computer generated images. 

Exhibition award winners will be displayed from October 11-13 in the entry foyer of the KML Center.  Other entries of merit will also be displayed, space permitting.

All entrants who submit works of art must consent to participation in the exhibition, if the work is chosen for exhibition.

Entry Fee:

Each entry shall include a fee of $15.  Artists may submit up to three entries for a single fee of $25.

Prizes:

A cash prize of $1000 will be awarded to the entry which best expresses the exhibition theme.  Additional $200 prizes will be awarded to entries that, in the opinion of the judges, display special merit.

Jurors:

Entries will be judged and prizes awarded by a panel composed of members of the art community and representatives of ChildLight Montessori School and the family of Kathryn M. Lafley. 

Entries will be judged based on artistic merit and expression of the exhibition theme.  All decisions of the judges are final.

Deadlines:

All entries are due by September 10, 2008.

Finalists will be announced on September 20, 2008.

Finalists will deliver the works selected for exhibition on September 30, 2008.

Winners will be announced on October 11, 2008.

How to Enter:

To enter, submit the following to ChildLight Montessori School, 395 Portland Street (Rt. 4), Berwick, Maine, 03901:

1.  A completed entry form that includes your name, title of the work, address, email and phone #, media, and dimensions.  Click here for the entry form.

2.  Slides, CD with Jpegs (at least 72 dpi), photos or color prints labeled with your name, title of the work, and indication of the vertical orientation of the work;

3.  Entry fee payable to ChildLight Montessori School.

Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you wish to have materials returned to you.  (While every effort to return slides and photos will be made, we cannot guarantee that you will receive them nor can we guarantee that they will be in perfect condition.)

About ChildLight Montessori School:  ChildLight Montessori School was founded in South Berwick, Maine, in 1995 and has become a treasured member of the Southern Maine educational community. It now has more than 100 alumni and a network of loyal parents and community partners.  In August, 2008, it will move into a beautiful earth-friendly building on 5 acres of land where it can continue its mission “to provide a loving, peaceful learning environment for children ages three through six using the philosophy and materials developed by Maria Montessori.”   According to its statement of mission, the school

About The Kathryn M. Lafley Center for the Humanities:  The Kathryn M. Lafley Center for the Humanities was founded in 2008 by her children and grandchildren to honor the memory of Kathryn M. Lafley and to foster the love of lifetime learning in literature, theater, art, music and history that she passed onto them.  Beginning in September, 2008, The KML Center will be located on the site of the ChildLight Montessori School.  The Center maintains a permanent collection of books and cultural materials.  It sponsors an annual cultural event each fall for the community and the school which focuses on some aspect of the family’s lifetime engagement with the humanities and the arts.
